Tire Chains
The advantages of using tire chains
Along with using snow tires, drivers in the extreme winter climes of the northern United States and Canada should consider using tire chains when they drive in the ice and snow. If you live in a mountainous or hilly area where snow tires just won’t cut it, tire chains are a good, safe alternative to sliding down (or off!) the mountain in wintry weather. Many larger vehicles use tire snow chains because they have to, by law. Consider buying care tire chains for your vehicle, but remember to check local laws regarding their safe and proper use.
What Kind of Chains Do I Need?
Car tire chains are known for providing extra tire traction while you’re driving in slippery or extremely snowy areas, especially when your car has to go uphill. They dig into the ice and snow, providing a safer alternative to regular snow tires. If you live in an area that doesn’t get a lot of ice and snow in winter, chances are you’ll never need tire chains. However, signage will be posted in areas where they are required by law.
Truck tire chains are definitely needed if your truck is an 18-wheeler. This is because trucks can’t always stop immediately, even in dry weather, because the gears don’t allow the driver to slam on the brakes. Your company will likely require you to carry chains, and some will even provide them for you – in many states, trucks are required by law to have them. Do your research and find out whether or not you need tire chains so that you’re not caught without them if they’re a legal requirement for your vehicle.
Tractor tire chains are beneficial for tractor tires that have to drive uphill in icy conditions. You can find these at any agricultural supply store. Though ATV tire chains are sold at tire stores that service adventure vehicles, chances are you won’t need them unless you’re planning to ATV in a mountainous area during the winter.
Before driving in an unfamiliar state in the winter, check the laws to see if you need snow tires or tire chains. Get your local mechanic to install them if you don’t feel comfortable putting them on yourself, and make tire chains part of your car’s winterization and stay safe on the road.
